Alien's 9780 product page
Available From: buyrfid.com ($2700), RFIDsupplychain.com ($2400), ac-corporation.com ($4122 - not a typo), geminicomputer.com ($2177)

Description:

Replacing the venerable and much loved 9770 series, this is Alien's next-generation stationary reader system. It supports up to 4 antennas, which can be either circular or linear in polarization. Like all Alien readers, it comes with an excellent development kit that includes, among other things, sample source code with free Java and Visual Basic libraries. It also inlcudes test software. Like nearly everyone else, Alien claims high-speed reading and excellent fault tolerance in real-world warehouse environments. In fairness, the 9780 is much faster than the 9770's were, and they were quite good to begin with.

Includes: reader, power supply, power cord, reference guide and serial cable. The developers kit also includes an interface guide with API's, a hardware technical specification, sample code, Java and Visual Basic libraries, antennas and tags.

Model: 9640
Street Price: $1100 - $1200
Ports: 1 (internal)
Supported Protocols: EPC Class 1
Product Brochure: (pdf, 3.8 mb)

Alien's 9640 product page

Description:

Perhaps the least expensive full-featured EPC compatible reader on the market, the 9640 is one of the simplest and most elegant pieces of equipment available for small and medium sized RFID systems. The reader and antenna are contained in one unit, so there are no antenna cables to thread, and it performs all of the most important functions of its big brother, the 4-port 9780, though without the ability to add antennas. Also, the antenna is designed to provide the benefits of both circular an linear polarization, though how they've accomplished this hasn't been made public.

Finally, the reader is completely ethernet ready. Hook it up to your LAN and your're ready to go. Binary and C language API's are included. At 50 tags per second, the read rate is less than impressive, but in the small operations this unit was designed for, it shouldn't be an issue.

Includes: reader with integrated antenna, power supply, power cord, reference guide and serial cable.

Model: 9930, 9932
Street Price: Not Available
Ports: 2 (1 useable)
Supported Protocols: EPC Class 1
Reads and writes tags
Product Brochure: (pdf, 1 mb)

Alien's 9930 product page

Description:

Designed to be integrated into devices such as label printers, Alien's OEM module comes in two versions. The 9930 has a TTL port for connecting to its host device, and the 9332 has an RS-232 port. The unit is compact and well designed, and the output power to the antenna can be controlled via software. This is helpful in tag writing applications as it helps users avoid inadvertently writing to distant tags.

A library of C language API's is included with the unit, but there is no Visual Basic support in the base package. A developer's kit is available, however, which includes some sample code.

Model: 2850
Street Price: Not Available
Ports: 2 (1 transmit, 1 receive)
Supported Protocols: EPC Class 1
Reads and writes tags
Product Brochure: (pdf, 3.5 mb)

Alien's 9930 product page

Description:

Designed specifically for use with battery-assisted semi-passive tags, the 2850 can reportedly read tags at up to 90 feet. The antennas are circular-polarized to eliminate tag-orientation problems, and the unit is compatible with tag data formatted as xml and ascii, and it can be configured to work with whatever custom data format you may require.

Included: Reader, transmit and receive antannas, antenna cables, AC power supply, a hardware setup guide, reader interface guide, and technical specification.
